Las Vegas, Nevada (May 20, 2017) – Taylor Miinch seems to have gotten winning figured out. It took the 22-year-old from Blossom Valley, California, 20 starts to get his first victory in the Lucas Oil Modified Series presented by RAM Mounts. It’s taken him 16 starts to get three more.

Miinch’s fourth career win and second in a row came Saturday night (May 20) at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway when he stalked pole-sitter and race leader Dylan Cappello for 67 laps before squeezing through a small opening and driving away to win the General Tire 75 presented by Sunoco Fuel.

The 1.086-scond triumph over fast qualifier and two-time champion Austin Barnes follows Miinch’s win at Tucson, Arizona, April 8, and gives him command of the Hoosier Tire West point standings with three of the 10 championship races complete.

Miinch, who finished 4 points behind Barnes in 2016, unofficially has a 34-point lead over Shelby Stroebel, who finished ninth Saturday night, and a 38-point advantage over Blake Rogers, who was 13th. Barnes moved from 10th to 4th with his runner-up effort.

Scott Winters of Tracy, California, was third, Trevor Cristiani of Boise, Idaho, fourth and Jason Irwin of Albuquerque, New Mexico, fifth Saturday night with Peoria, Arizona, resident Cappello fading to sixth.

The race was won in typical fashion for Miinch, who hasn’t finished below fourth place in his past nine starts. He talked late last season of preferring a conservative approach and he and his Viejas Casino/ZOTTO Mattress/Lineer STR Chevrolet team have applied for a patent on that formula.

“I was being conservative the whole race,” said Miinch, who got his first career win at The Bullring in November of 2016. “I started fifth and kind of cruised for the first 30 laps, then at the first caution I took the cone to the outside (in the Delaware start that allows a driver to choose the high or low groove) and got up alongside Scott Winters and I was able to get second. I just cruised because I didn’t want to burn my stuff up and I saw Dylan getting loose about lap 55 or 60.

“I saw Dylan make a little bit of a mistake. He was getting loose for about five laps before that. I felt if I could get to him I could put some pressure on him and hopefully have him make a mistake. I saw the lapped car coming up so I said ‘I guess it’s time to go.’ I saw a hole (on the bottom of the track) and I took it and it worked out. We got into each other a little bit, Dylan raced me pretty hard, but it was good fun racing.”

They all can try to have more fun when the series resumes June 10 at Madera (California) Speedway.
